Dr. Antonio Layton’s imminent appointment as superintendent of Taos Municipal Schools follows a meticulous search process conducted by JG Consulting, in collaboration with the Taos Municipal Schools Board of Education, Taos Pueblo, and the surrounding community.

A Leadership Academy Graduate

Dr. Layton, a distinguished graduate of the Leadership Academy which specializes in preparing cabinet-level leaders for the role of Superintendent, brings a wealth of experience from his tenure as the Executive Director of Human Resources at Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District in Edinburg, Texas. His selection comes after careful consideration by the board, culminating in a 3-2 vote in his favor.

School Board Selection Process

In his previous capacity, Dr. Layton played a pivotal role as the Executive Director of Human Resources at Edcouch-Elsa Independent School District. His ascension to the superintendent position comes as Renetta Mondragon, the interim superintendent succeeding Valerie Trujillo, stepped aside late last year.

The decision to appoint Dr. Layton was reached after thorough deliberations conducted during meetings held on Monday and Tuesday. With a 3-2 vote in favor, the board selected Dr. Layton over Mondragon, recognizing his potential to lead a student body of approximately 2,000 learners.

Encompassing Diverse Educational Landscapes

Dr. Layton’s professional journey encompasses diverse educational landscapes across Southern Texas. He has served as a principal at La Villa Independent School District and Harlingen Consolidated Independent School District, showcasing a breadth of experience and leadership acumen.

The selection process, spanning interviews conducted over several weeks, aimed to solicit community input regarding the desired attributes of the incoming superintendent. Whether local or external, each candidate’s suitability was assessed against the backdrop of community expectations. While local candidates bring familiarity with the district, external hires offer fresh perspectives, fostering innovation and growth.

A New Chapter

Dr. Layton is slated to assume his new role on May 20, signaling a new chapter in Taos Municipal Schools’ leadership and educational journey.
